This season a whole new generation of Super Rugby players have entered the fray and stamped their mark on the competition. Many of them, even with only a few months of playing have already earmarked themeselves ready for higher honours. Some new players, like Brodie Retallick and Ben Tameifuna have established themselves as my some of my favourite players.
Of course, I am a Chiefs fan, so a little biased! Even after the loss to the Reds last week they are top of the Super Rugby table (along with the Stormers). Before the season started no critics gave the Chiefs a chance. The main reason is because they had such shallow depth in their already inexperienced forwards.
So it was a little surprising when we lost our two best props in the opening game, and a young 20 year old prop, Ben Tameifuna (check out his profile), stepped up and eventually played his way into the All Black training squad!
Hopefully the Chiefs can bounce back from the loss to the Reds this week. The Bulls will be suffering from the loss to the Highlanders. This weekend shapes as a huge game for the Super Rugby table and upcoming finals.
PS. The Chiefs did bounce back! They just had a huge game against the Bulls. Unfortunately my boy Ben Tameifuna didn’t get any game time and judging by how well Ben Afeaki played, he will really struggle to get back in the team. This is surprising considering his form was good enough to get him into the All Blacks. Also, it’s worth noting that Brodie Retallick didn’t have his best game.
